Established in 1847, the Epsom and Ewell Gas Company played a significant role in providing gas services to the communities of Epsom and Ewell. During its early years, the company primarily produced gas through the destructive distillation of coal, which was the prevalent method in the 19th century.
As technology advanced, the company transitioned to more modern gas production methods, including the use of oil and natural gas. When the UK started turning away from gas in the 1990s many gas holders across the UK were dismantled. The process resulted in a network of redundant gas manufacturing infrastructure including the site in East Street.
Prior to the remediation and construction phase, the historic gas infrastructure including the remaining pipeline network and gas holders will be demolished and removed from the site.
A new modern gas governor compound will be created on the site, which will control and distribute the gas supplies serving the borough.
Following the installation of the new gas distribution infrastructure, the first phase of the remediation process will begin with any contamination from the historic industrial uses on the site, safely cleaned and removed by specialist remediation ground engineer contractors, which will deliver significant environmental and social benefits to Epsom.
